There have been rumors about the new generation of PlayStation gaming console for a long time now. This is of course not surprising since the original PS4 was announced at the end of 2013. In the meantime, the PS4 Slim and PS4 Pro were announced, but the standard 7-year life cycle is over next year and so it is waiting for the release of Sony’s new PlayStation. This will be a completely new console, probably the Sony PS5, although the name is still unclear.

Almost two weeks ago, the Japanese game manufacturer released information about the Sony PS5 specs for the first time during an interview. The new console becomes more powerful, offers an 8K resolution, receives 3D audio, ray tracing and has an SSD, which means that much shorter loading times can be achieved. The new 8K game console would no longer appear in 2019, but many still hope for a release in 2020.

Last week it became clear from the financial report of Sony that the company has already invested a lot in the development of the new console. In addition, Takashi Mochizuki, a reporter for The Wall Street Journal, announced via social media that the PS5 will not be announced in the coming year either. In other words, you don’t have to expect a new PlayStation 5 before March 2020.

It is not the first time that The Wall Street Journal reports this. The same reporter held an interview with the director of the PlayStation division, Tsuyoshi Kodera, in May of last year. During the interview it became clear that the release date of the Sony PlayStation 5 would take at least another three years, so we are already in 2021.

Buying a Sony PS5 is not there yet, although the wait seems to be rewarded. Sony may again opt for a release in November, this was also the case with the PS3 and PS4. In that case, we hope that it will be 2020, not November 2021. In Europe, we usually have to wait another month or three more before you can buy the console.

Sony PlayStation 5 specifications

Nothing is known about the design of Sony’s new 8K game console. If we look at the full PlayStation line-up from 1995 to the present, we see great differences in the design of the consoles, from a rectangular PS2 to a more round-shaped PS3. LetsGoDigital has placed these designs side by side and has come to the next design for the PS5. The V-shaped LED bar on the top refers to the Roman numeral 5.

Little is known about the price of the new Sony PlayStation. Although Peter Rubin – the reporter from Wired who held the interview with Cerny two weeks ago about the specifications of the PS5 – via Twitter said that; “Sony wants to offer the console at a suggested retail price that is attractive to gamers, taking into account the extra functionalities.”

The introductory price of the PS4 Pro was € 400. For the Xbox One X, which was launched two years later, the introduction price was € 500. It seems likely that the PS5 will also cost at least € 500 during the release. Sony will want to prevent the PlayStation from being put on the market too expensive, after all, they have had bad experiences with the PS3. But no matter how you get used to it, an SSD costs considerably more than an HDD and it will still have to be paid for.
