Sonim XP8 Rugged smartphone review: A fireman’s phone

Sonim has launched a new rugged Android smartphone dubbed the Sonim XP8. The device is meant to last even in the toughest of the situations.

The device is a perfect choice for a smartphone for people who work in extreme conditions – firemen, construction workers, emergency responders, and even for those who tend to drop their phones more times than often.

The Sonim XP8 is constructed to meet MIL-STD-810G US military standards for ruggedness, meaning essentially that it can easily withstand a considerable amount of water, dust, shock, temperature, pressure, shock, radiations, and stuff of that sorts.

Coming to the specifications of the device, the XP8 sports a 5-inch FHD display (puncture resistant) giving out a resolution of 1920×1080 pixels. There are two dedicated front-firing speakers which, when combined, can produce up to 100dB+ of sound meaning that one will be able to hear the caller even in the noisiest of environments.

The device also features a push-to-talk button on the side which will work even if one is wearing thick gloves. You can set your emergency contact and all you need to do is to press the button in order to talk to that contact. You won’t have to dial the number manually. This can come in handy in emergency situations. The push-to-talk feature acts more or less like a walkie-talkie.

Powering the device is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 630 processor coupled with 4GB of RAM. On the memory front, we get 64GB of internal storage which can further be expanded with the help of an external SD card.

Moving to the camera, the Sonim XP8 sports a 12MP camera on the back with PDAF and OIS and an 8MP camera on the front for selfies. There is a huge 4,900 mAh battery provided which is capable of quick charge.

Coming to the dimensions, the device is 18mm thick and weighs 335g. Certainly, style is something the company did not have in mind while designing the XP8.
