Xiaomi has just launched a new smartphone dubbed theXiaomi Redmi Y1.
The Redmi Y1 is essentially a mid-range smartphone which packs in a lot of flagship-like specifications. The prime highlight of the device is the 16MP front-facing camera which comes with a Selfie-light.
Clearly, Xiaomi is looking forward to competing with the likes of companies like Vivoand Oppowhich offer a great selfie experience to selfie lovers. And, as usual, the best way to do so is to provide all the features at a price nobody could even think of.
Coming back to the device, the Redmi Y1 not only has an amazing set of cameras, it can also compete with the other Android smartphones in its price range pretty easily. The device is equipped with a pretty capable set of hardware and looks just amazing. Talking about the looks, however, won’t bring out anything new as the Redmi Y1 looks just like its others siblings and that’s not a bad thing at all considering they all look great.
The device would go on sale in India on 8th November. So, without waiting anymore, let’s get to know the full specifications of the Xiaomi Redmi Y1.
Xiaomi Redmi Y1: Full Specifications
There are, currently, two variants of the device: one with 32GB of internal storage and the other with 64GB of internal storage. Other than the storage, there is no difference between the two variants and, truth be told, it won’t be a wise decision to go for the lower storage model.
The camera is the prime highlight of the device. On the front, we get a 16MP sensor with an LED Selfie-light. There is a bunch of features provided especially for the main camera such as a portrait mode and Beautify 3.0 modewhich makes the selfies stand out. How well does the camera perform in low lights is yet to be tested. But the presence of the flashlight would definitely help the case.
There are, in fact, 36 different beauty profiles which clearly indicate how dedicate Xiaomi is to make the Redmi Y1 a perfect choice for selfie enthusiasts.
There is also a 16MP rear camera with a dual-tone flash.
No bells and whistles out here. The device sports a 5.5-inch HD Display which is one big let down as there are a lot of Android smartphones which boast of a Full HD Display at the same price. That being said, Xiaomi has always succeeded to bring out the best in terms of displays. The presence of an HD Display also means that the Redmi Y1 will have a solid battery life.
Coming to the battery, the device has a massive 3,080 mAh battery coupled with the company’s in-house battery optimization apps. As claimed by Xiaomi, the Redmi Y1 would easily last 10 hours if you are playing media content on it, 12 hours of gaming, and 21 hours of reading. These are pretty big numbers and the actual battery life might vary. But, it is good to see the company boasting of big numbers at the very least.
As is the case with almost all the midrangers of the current times, the Redmi Y1 also has the typical Qualcomm Snapdragon 435 Chipset which has eight cores. The processor is capable enough to handle the day-to-day tasks without any hiccups. But, one just can not expect it to be a powerhouse of a smartphone.
There is nothing new when it comes to the design of the Redmi Y1. The device features an all-metal unibody design. There is a fingerprint scanner at the back of the device which is positioned to perfection. The usual Mibranding is on the bottom of the back. There are two speaker grills at the bottom out of which only one is the real speaker and the other one holds the microphone. In the center, there is a standard USB 2.0 port. The Redmi Y1 does not support Quick Charging. The device is available in three different color variants – Gold, Rose Gold, and Dark Grey.
As said, there are two variants of the device in terms of the memory. In addition to the internal memory, the Redmi Y1 supports memory expansion up to 128GB with the help of an external memory card. One good thing about the device is the fact that you can use two different SIM cards at the same time and insert an external SD card as well. There is no hybrid tray mess this time.
The Redmi Y1 runs on the latest iteration of Xiaomi’s custom skin: MIUI 9 on top of Android Nougat. As of now, there is no official confirmation as to whether or not the device will be updated to Android Oreo. The chances, though, are highly unlikely that we won’t see a future update for this device.
At this price tag, the Redmi Y1 is one hell of a smartphone. You could not ask for anything more. It is definitely a worthy contender in the mid-range Android ecosystem and you could, for sure, go for the device.
