Samsung has reportedly patented a new flip cover which has displays both at the front and at the back.
The report has arrived at Android Updated courtesy of Letsgodigital.
On 13 December 2018, WIPO (World Intellectual Property Organization) and USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) published a patent from Samsung Electronics for an ‘Accessory device for portable devices’. The patent describes a Samsung smartphone cover that is provided with an electrophoretic display.
It is a flip cover, covering both the back, the sides and the front of the smartphone. The smartphone case will be provided with an electrophoretic display both on the front and the back. This type of display requires a low battery capacity, allowing it to be powered wirelessly via your smartphone. In addition, the phone case is provided with NFC.
The smartphone accessory has its own PCB (PCB) with processor, antenna and a display controller. This way authentication of the accessory can also take place separately from the smartphone itself.
In terms of display formats, various options are described. Both on the front and the back a screen can be used that takes up to 98% of the cover. In addition to an almost full-screen display, it is also possible to opt for a smaller screen, which covers only the lower half of the cover. In this case, the display size covers a maximum of 35% of the cover.
The display size on the front can vary with that on the back. The phone itself can have one touchscreen, but it can also be a double-sided smartphone. A good example of this we have seen last week when Vivo announced the NEX Dual Display Edition.
The Samsung smartphone cover can be made of different materials, think of metal, wood or plastic material as well as polycarbonate. The cover can also be transparent so that the film layer that is applied directly under the cover can be provided with a flashy image. As an example, several Marvel figures are shown, which can be seen on the back of the Samsung smartphone. The display unit is placed underneath the image so that it shines through the image as it were.
