Xiaomi Mi 8 review
The Xiaomi Mi 8 is something we all were eagerly waiting for. Though the OnePlus 6 was one of the most hyped smartphones of 2018, the device did not have the "it" factor which is available in plenty in the Mi 8.
Xiaomi has finally unveiled the Xiaomi Mi 8 along with the Xiaomi Mi 8 SE and the Xiaomi Mi 8 Explorer Edition. The device has a lot going on when it comes to new features and performance.
Xiaomi Mi 8: Full specifications
The Xiaomi Mi 8 sports a 6.21-inch FHD+ AMOLED display with a resolution of 2248 x 1080 pixels, a screen-to-body ratio of 88.5 percent, 60000:1 contrast ratio, up to 600nits brightness, an 18.7:9 aspect ratio, HDR support, DCI-P3 color gamut, Eye protection mode, and an Always-On Display. There is a notch at the top of the display which houses the front camera and an infrared sensor for facial unlock.
Power, battery, and OS
The Xiaomi Mi 8 is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 chipset coupled with 6GB of RAM and 64GB/128GB/256GB of internal storage which can further be expanded with the help of an external SD card. The device scored a whopping 300,000 on AnTuTu.
A 3,400 mAh battery fuels the device which is capable of Quick Charge 4+ fast charging.
As far as the OS is concerned, the Mi 8 runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with MIUI 10 on top of it.
Moving to the cameras, the Mi 8 sports a dual camera setup at the back (12MP Sony IMX363 sensor, f/1.8 aperture, 1.4micron pixel size + 12MP S5K3M3 sensor, f/2.4 aperture, 1micron pixel size). The camera setup offers an amazing photography experience and has features like 4-axis optical image stabilization, dual-pixel autofocus, and optical zoom.
The camera also comes equipped with AI capabilities which give a studio-like imagery experience. As a matter of fact, the Mi 8 scored the highest score (105) for photos on DxOMark mobile photography platform. Here are a couple of live shots taken from the device:
Moving on to the front camera, the Mi 8 sports a 20MP selfie snapper which is equally amazing. With a f/2.0 aperture and a whopping pixel size of 1.8micron, the front camera of the device is certainly one of the best out there. The camera has support for AI portrait selfies and AI Beauty.
Infrared facial unlock
The Xiaomi Mi 8 features an Infrared Face Unlock mechanism which, as claimed by the company, offers the best facial unlock system in the world of Android to date.
The Xiaomi Mi 8 is the world’s first smartphone to feature a dual-frequency GPS which will provide the most accurate location tracking as it will the interfaces like buildings and signal delays.
